Why clean water in Zambia? In 2006 I was returning home from ministering at a leadership conference in Ethiopia. During one of the long flights, I clearly heard the Father tell me to reach one million children in Sub-Saharan Africa with clean water and the gospel of Jesus Christ. This totally caught me off guard and caused me concern as to how I could possible accomplish such a huge task. Through much prayer and waiting on the Father’s leading, we have launched OneMillionChildren Inc. It is important to understand that God given visions will always be so big that you will not be able to accomplish them without Him. Remember that “without faith it is impossible to please Him…” (Hebrews 11:6) If you have a vision in your heart and mind, then wait on your heavenly Father’s leading; He will bring it to pass.
I realized that there were two important focus areas for OMC, one being the children’s physical needs and also their spiritual needs. God showed me a scripture in Psalm 65:9 which says; “the river of God is full of water…” This gave me great confidence for both focus areas. We exist to transform each child’s life. The most important part of that transformation is their eternal soul. This is what Isaiah meant in 12:3 when he wrote; “therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” Jesus made it very clear how important sharing the gospel with children is. “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. For the Son of Man has come to save that which is lost.” (Matthew 18:10-11) We want to, through the word of God, help each of these children reach their God-given potential. Children always have an open door into the Father’s presence. “…Jesus said let the little children come to me and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven." This is the foundation for why OMC exists.
God also spoke to me about ministering to two of their natural needs; clean water and medical support. In 2011 6.9 million children died worldwide under the age of five years old. Of that number about half of those deaths occurred in Sub-Saharan Africa. That means that approximately 9,500 children under the age of five, die each day in Sub-Saharan Africa. About 70% of those deaths are caused by one of five main problems. They are acute respiratory infections, diarrhea, measles, malaria, and malnutrition. Most of these children could be saved by providing them with clean drinking water, low cost vaccines and antibiotics, oral rehydration therapy and bed nets to help prevent malaria. As you can see our mission is to help to meet many of these needs, especially in areas of Africa that are very remote. “When the poor and needy search for water and there is none, and their tongues are parched from thirst, then I the Lord will answer them…everyone will see this miracle and understand that it is the Lord, the Holy one of Israel, who did it.” (Isaiah 41:17, 20)
